Charles Kingsleys Winter Garden Sample Essay
Charles Kingsley's Winter Garden Sample EssayCharles Kingsley's essay, 'The Garden of Flowers,' was published in an essay collection called The Wizard of Oz. This piece of the essay has been a classic for more than one hundred years. Today the essay can be read as a short story by Dorothy and Toto, or as a lesson in planting and preserving nature. In his essay, Kingsley provides a brief description of the garden featured in the movie. He compares it to a wedding, and points out that there are three great marriages in the movie. He compares the wedding to the three mountains, and he compares it to the first frost. He also compares the two mountains to the snowcapped peaks of Scotland.Kingsley describes how the wedding begins, showing Toto in the process of dropping Dorothy's scarf into the hat. After she puts it on, the wedding is complete, and Toto and Dorothy and everyone else go to their wedding in the 'white frost.' In addition, he describes the beauty of the roses, and how the 'wh ite frost' turns them into pure gold and smoothness. While reading the piece, a question arises in the mind of the reader. What does the theme of this essay mean to the gardener? According to Kingsley, this poem is about the wonders of Nature. But what does the gardener have to gain from reading this poem?Kingsley states that the gardener is like the bride who wants a garden. She wants flowers to bloom and is ready to spend all of her effort and money planting them. She wants her wedding to be an experience that lasts forever. Her garden is a memorial of her wedding.Thepiece also shows the lengths the gardener will go to get her garden to bloom. She will work very hard, often working over sixty hours a week. This hard work, however, creates beautiful flowers.Gardens are not just for beauty; they are places to relax and prepare for a lifetime of memories. A garden is a place of peace, quiet, and beauty. All people want peace and quiet, so they will spend their hard work to plant, wate r, and care for their gardens. My next summer garden essay will deal with plants and water. I hope you will enjoy this look at gardening.
